ALTAMONT – South Central struggled during its season-opening Jr. Legion tournament in Altamont on Saturday, losing both games in pool play.
In each of the two games, a 4-1 loss to Newton and a 12-3 loss to Altamont, Post 519 gave up the lead early on and wasn’t able to recover.
Newton left the bases loaded in the first inning, but put a run on the board in the third and then took advantage of three walks, two hits and an error in the fourth to go ahead, 4-0.
Dylan Smith reached on an error for South Central in the sixth, and he scored after both Seven Wright and Kyle Bray hit singles.
Smith earlier in the game had a single, as did Heath Hoffmann.
Against Altamont, Post 519 committed six errors while getting just two hits.
One of the hits, a single by Austin Schwarm, drove home a pair of runs in the third. Wright, who walked, and Dalton Ricketts, who reached on an error, scored on that hit.
A batter later, Hoffmann bounced into a fielder’s choice to bring home Rudy Hablewitz, who had walked.
By that time, however, Altamont had already opened an 8-0 lead, despite having just three hits.
Post 512 added four more runs in the fifth, and the game would be called due to time at the end of the fifth.
Bray had South Central’s other hit in the game.
