The South Central High School bass fishing team placed second at the Illinois High School Association state tournament on Saturday at Carlyle Lake.

South Central caught seven fish for a total of 12 pounds, 13 ounces during the two-day event. Canton High School won the event, with 14 pounds, 6 ounces worth of fish.

In fifth place after catching five fish weighing 8 pounds, 14 ounces on Friday, South Central only caught two fish on the second day.

Every bass mattered, however, as South Central was just 1 ounce ahead of Highland's No. 2 team and 3 ounces ahead of Highland's No. 1 team, which finished third and fourth, respectively.

The state finals were initially scheduled for May 6-7, but because of the heavy rains that fell over Carlyle that week, the tournament had to be rescheduled for a time  when the water levels were lower.
