South Central girls win regional game

The South Central High School girls basketball was unable to play all its regular-season games due to cancellations, but a shortened season did not stop the Lady Cougars from winning their first-round regional tournament game at Red Hill on Monday.

Facing Midland Trail Conference rival Clay City, South Central got 12 points from senior Ashley Pollard in a 37-30 win, despite not having practiced in eight days.

The Lady Cougars advanced to play MTC regular-season champion North Clay on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

"We made the plays when we needed to, to get the win," said coach Gary Kapper. "We will work on some things on Tuesday to get ready for the game with North Clay."

Junior Tori Logue scored six points in the second quarter, as the Lady Cougars scored 13 points as a team to take a 22-18 halftime lead.

Defensively, South Central then held the Lady Wolves to just 11 points in the second half to secure the victory.

Pollard, Logue and junior Alexis Phillips each advanced in the 3-point shooting competition.
