VANDALIA – The Lady Cougars gave Vandalia all they could in the championship game of Saturday’s Vandalia Tournament, but the hosts were just too strong.
After back-to-back tight matches to finish pool play, South Central played the Lady Vandals to a 24-26, 22-25 decision.
The first set was never more than two points apart, with the score being tied 16 times, but the second set was a lot different.
Vandalia stormed out to a 13-3 lead against the Lady Cougars (10-3), but they never gave up, using an 11-1 run to tie the score at 14-14. After that, the set was again never more than two points apart until the final kill.
“We did make a game out of it, but I think we dug ourselves too far down,” said coach Mary Brimberry. “It was tough coming back, but they didn’t put their heads down.
“They could have just walked off and been done, but that’s not their style, and I am proud of them for that.
“At this time last year, we had four losses,” she said. “This year, we only have three and two of them are to Vandalia, which has a nice team.”

Sophomore Maria Brasel and senior Natalie Chapman each had 34 kill assists, and had six and four service aces, respectively.
