Sixth-grade boys have undefeated season
The Vandalia Junior High sixth-grade boys basketball team won the Brownstown Tournament on Friday to complete an undefeated season with a 13-0 record.
Coach Mark Johnson said he had a balanced team that expected to win every time they took the floor.
"Defensively, the kids were as good as any group I have ever had, and we rebounded the ball well," he said. "They shared the ball well offensively, and it was a team effort."
Leading scorer Curtis Gordon scored 15 points, and Richie Well added 11 as the Vandals defeated Brownstown, 43-21, to end their perfect season.
To get to that game, the Vandals needed overtime to defeat Patoka, 37-35. In that game, Gordon scored 17 points, and Alec Schroeder added eight.
Schroeder's bucket with less than two seconds left earned Vandalia the win.
In the first game of the tournament, the Vandals defeated Ramsey, 41-23. Well, Gordon and Kain Dufaux combined for 29 points.
Earlier in the season, the Vandals won the Vandalia Tournament by beating St. Elmo, 22-16.
Five different players led the team in scoring at least once throughout the season, and the Vandals outscored their opponents on average by 13.2 points per game (35.3 to 22.1).
The sixth-grade B-team also had a solid season, finishing 4-4.
"Those guys came on toward the end of the season, and could contribute next season and later on," Johnson said.
