After two long road trips, the Vandals will be at home for the next two games.
“It was two long bus rides against two good ball clubs, so we kind of got a baptism by fire the first two weeks,” said coach John Stout after his team surrendered 46 points in both of those games. “It’ll be nice to get around some familiar surroundings.”
Staunton (2-0) will come to town for a 7 p.m. game this Friday in what is expected to be another tough matchup for the Vandals (0-2).
The Bulldogs have defeated Pana (1-1) and Hillsboro (1-1) this fall, and will bring another dual-threat quarterback in Jake Bruhn, who will be the third such QB the Vandals have faced this year.
“They have an active quarterback,” Stout said. “They will try to get the ball in the perimeter and try to run it up the middle.”
Bruhn will also throw, as he has passed for 255 yards to go along with his 145 rushing yards through two games. He has accounted for seven total touchdowns.
Returning for Vandalia will be juniors Collin Nestleroad and Codie Jackson, two starters who missed last week’s game due to concussions, but the Vandals will be without senior running back Dalton Smith, who is out with a concussion.
With them back, and certain areas of the team showing improvement, Stout is confident his team will put up a better performance than last Friday’s 46-0 loss at Carlinville.
“It probably didn’t look like it from the stands, but from the film, we have found that we have settled some issues,” Stout said. “This group will get better every week, and hopefully, we will start seeing some tangible results.”
The following home date (Sept. 20) will be homecoming, and there will be a special ceremony prior to the Vandals and Roxana taking the field.
Members of the undefeated 1963 Vandalia football team will be honored in a 50th anniversary ceremony before the game.
