As the only freshman in the 200-meter dash state preliminaries, South Central’s Chase Riley was facing tough odds as he competed against athletes who are closer to being men than boys.

With the slowest qualifying time, Riley had little chance to make the event finals, but he was able to run a faster time than he did at sectionals and better his seed last Thursday.

Running for the Patoka/South Central co-op, Riley ran the race in 23.87 seconds to finish 29th out of 31 runners on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Riley’s time was 1.26 seconds from the ninth-place finisher, the final athlete to make the finals.

He had run a time of 24.05 seconds at the Newton Sectional to qualify for state.
