The Brownstown Volunteer Fire Department teamed up with other area emergency response agencies to present a mock disaster drill last Wednesday afternoon at Brownstown High School to demonstrate to students the seriousness of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Those participating in the drill included emergency responders from Altamont and Effingham County, AirEvac, Fayette County Sheriff's Office and Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.
"It was a significant undertaking by these groups, and they did an outstanding job of showing us how they go about their business," BHS Principal Mike Shackelford said.
"We appreciate them taking the time to give this presentation to our students," he said.
"These people do not have to, but they put their lives on the line daily, many times for people that they don't even know.
"It is priceless for our young people to be able to witness them demonstrate their skills and professionalism.
"It was a very sobering presentation, from start to finish," Shackelford said.
He also noted that Mike Sasse, a Brownstown firefighter and paramedic, presented the Brownstown's Junior Firefighter program to students.
