Remember to thank a veteran

This  weekend, we have the opportunity to pay tribute to those special men and women who have sacrificed for the rest of us by serving in the military.

As we observe Memorial Day on Monday, we will be reminded of the ways those courageous individuals have placed our well-being above their own comfort and safety. In some cases, they actually laid down their life as a sacrifice to keep our nation free.

It's a monumental debt that we owe. But it's one that all too often we forget.

To honor those who sacrificed for us, we would do well to attend one (or more) of the Memorial Day programs planned in the county:

• Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Crawford-Hale American Legion Home in Vandalia.

• Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Park.

• Monday at 11 a.m. at Brownstown Central Park.

• Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Elmo's Veterans' Memorial Wall at the Phillips Building.

As you attend those – or others being held across our nation this weekend – pause and pay tribute to the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the military. Though they'd never ask for it, an expression of our gratitude to them would be in order.
