RAMSEY – The Rams played catch-up all game, but when the time limit was reached, they were on top in the third-place game of the Ramsey Tournament, earning a 7-6 win.

Ramsey scored four times in the third, capped by a two-run double from senior Austin Cunningham to tie the game at six, and senior Ryan Black added an RBI double in the fourth to take the team’s first lead of the game and secure the win.

Junior Tylor Knisley pitched a perfect fifth inning to earn the victory, with the game ending early on the tournament’s 1:45 time limit rule

“We needed to get that first win,” said Rams coach Tony Kreke said. “You need one win to get that winning attitude.

“You like to finish a game, but time restraints are what they are,” he said. “My hat’s off to Mulberry Grove, because they came out and fought today.”

The Aces took a 3-0 lead after the top of first, with Jesse Sloan doubling and scoring, Derek Childress singling and scoring on a wild pitch, and Nate Ketchem walking and scoring on an error.

Ramsey got two of those runs back in the bottom half, with Knisley and Waylon Davis both scoring.

Mulberry Grove, however, added three more runs in the top of third, with Alex Goodin, Matt Korte and Jesse Jernigan each scoring, and Jacob Thomas and Kaiah Miller each getting an RBI.

“I think the positives today were that we swung the bats early and had a lot of quality at-bats,” said first-year Aces coach Chad Nelson. “There’s still work to do, but we’re getting better.”

Besides Cunningham’s big hit, senior Tyler Pryor drove home a run in the third on a sac fly and Tristan Wesselman brought in one on a single.

“We can’t fold,” Kreke said. “If you stay positive, string some hits together and have good base running, things will happen.

“I hate coming from behind,” he said. “The pitchers need to learn to control themselves and throw strikes to minimize the damage.”
