After state lawmakers have voiced their opposition to tax increases, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn announced on Tuesday his plan for sweeping layoffs in state agencies, including 127 at Vandalia Correctional Center.
Saying that he was vetoing much of the budget OK’d by legislators two months ago, Quinn said he was initiating the layoffs of 2,500 state workers.
Quinn also said that his plans include furlough days for both union and non-union employees, and that he would initiate 2,500 more layoffs if those employees fail to go along with the furlough days.
