Lady Cougars take fourth at Herrin Tournament
South Central’s volleyball team went 3-2 to finish fourth at Saturday’s Herrin Tournament.

After winning the first three games in pool by defeating Marissa, 25-14, 25-20, Johnston City, 25-17, 25-14, and Crab Orchard, 25-9, 23-25, 15-9, the Lady Cougars ran in to trouble against Carterville in the final game of pool play and Herrin in the third-place match.

Carterville beat South Central (15-5), 26-24, 25-21, and Herrin won a close match, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11.

Seniors Kallie Garret (27) and Lincoln Brasel (25) led the team in kills, while sophomore Maria Brasel added 10 aces and 41 assists. Senior Natalie Chapman had 33 assists and four aces in the tournament.

Jr. Lady Vandals take third at tournament
The Vandalia Jr. High eighth-grade girls basketball team placed third in the Old Capitol Classic on Friday, defeating Brownstown, 30-22.

Emma Meyer had a season-high 15 points in the game to lead Vandalia (2-1).

Altamont defeated Pocahontas to win the tournament. The Vandalia seventh-graders placed fourth, but game results were not reported.

Jr. Lady Vandals get win
The Vandalia Jr. High eighth-grade girls basketball team picked up at Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick on Tuesday.

The Jr. Lady Vandals got a season-high 13 points from Jensen Hollinshead in the 27-18 victory.
Emma Meyer added eight points.

Seventh-grade results were not reported.

St. Elmo gets dual-conference victory against Beecher City
The Lady Eagles picked up a 25-9, 25-12 victory against conference rival Beecher City on Tuesday.

Picking up an Egyptian-Illini and National Trail Conference win, St. Elmo (15-6, 5-1 EIC, 5-2 NTC) got four kills from each senior Savannah Feezel and freshman Gabi Moore.

Senior Megan Maxey added four service aces, and senior Perry Manley had 13 assists.

Lady Eagles beat local rival in EIC match
St. Elmo defeated Patoka, 25-9, 25-4, on Monday night for an Egyptian-Illini Conference victory.

Senior Savannah Feezel paced the attack with eight kills, and senior Heather Seibert served 10 aces for the Lady Eagles (14-6, 4-1 EIC).

Leaders for Patoka were Taylor Meyer, Darian Tolka and Arizona Berning, who each had one kill.

Lady Bombers pick up fifth win
Brownstown’s volleyball team has won two of its past three games to improve its record to 5-10 on the season after beating Odin, 25-18, 25-16, on Monday.

Dani Austin and Shenisa Dunn each had five kills for the Lady Bombers, and Chelsey Lange added five aces.

Senior Lincoln Brasel had a team-high seven kills in the match, and sophomore Maria Brasel had 12 assists. Lexi Schafer served three aces for South Central (16-5, 5-1 NTC).

Cougars fall in non-conference game
South Central’s baseball team hit three home runs, but it wasn't  enough to power past North Clay last Friday in a 9-7 non-conference loss.

Heath Hoffmann hit two home runs in the game and drove in six, and Kyle Bray clobbered a solo shot in the fourth, but a rally in the seventh inning fell two runs short.

The Lady Eagles had little trouble in knocking off National Trail Conference rival Neoga last Thursday, winning in straight sets, 25-14, 25-14.

Senior Savannah Feezel led the attack, with six kills, and senior Heather Seibert served up three aces for the St. Elmo (13-6, 4-2 NTC).

The Lady Cougars picked up another win last Thursday, knocking off North Clay, 25-13, 25-20.

Senior Lincoln Brasel had seven kills to lead South Central, and three players – Maria Brasel, Macie Cain and Natalie Chapman – each had a service ace for the Lady Cougars (12-3).

Lady Bombers fall in NTC contest
Brownstown’s volleyball team wasn’t able to get by National Trail Conference rival Altamont last Thursday, losing, 25-22, 25-14.

Tara Johnson had three kills to lead the attack, while she and Oberlink each had two aces for the Lady Bombers (4-10, 1-6 NTC).

South Central ties Woodlawn
In a game canceled due to darkness, South Central and Woodlawn tied 7-7 in baseball last Wednesday.

The non-conference game will not be finished.

Both teams had 11 hits, with the Cougars (12-3-1) getting two from each Heath Hoffmann, Austin Schwarm and Dylan Smith.

South Central led 7-0 early in the game, but a five-run sixth inning helped the Cardinals tie it up. Shawn Meyer started for the Cougars and Noah Powless pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief.

St. Elmo’s volleyball lost a close National Trail Conference match to St. Anthony last Tuesday, falling, 15-25, 26-24, 17-25.

Seniors Savannah Feezel and Katie Stites led the attack with eight kills for the Lady Eagles (12-5, 3-2 NTC).
Perry Manley, a senior, and 19 assists and Erica Behl had two service aces.
