Powless clobbers 2 grand slams

Junior Noah Powless hit grand slams in back-to-back innings, but Salem hit seven long balls in last Wednesday’s offensive showcase that ended with South Central falling 21-17.

Powless has three grand slams in the past two games and four homers in the past three, giving him 15 RBI in that span.

Junior Dylan Smith had three hits and homered for the second straight game, and senior Kyle Bray went 4-for-6, with a double and two RBI.

The Cougars (8-14) scored in all but the third inning, but Salem had at least five runs in three different frames to hold a lead for the entire game – including a 14-4 lead after three innings and a 21-8 advantage after the top of the fifth.

South Central scored six times in the bottom of the frame to take the run-rule out of effect, and added two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Cougars’ 20 hits were a season-high, and give them 37 in two games – one fewer than they had in the previous five games. They have scored 29 runs in the same span.
