Though neither team knew it at the time, the second game of last Tuesday’s doubleheader against Salem ended up counting in the District standings.
A doubleheader at Salem was scheduled for Sunday, with the first game to count in the District standings, but those games were canceled.
It was decided on Tuesday night that Vandalia’s 16-12 win from last Tuesday night would be a District game, giving Post 95 at least a share of the regular-season title.
The final District game was held on Wednesday against Robinson. With a win, Vandalia would be the outright champion, with a 9-1 record.
The District Tournament will be played from Thursday-Sunday at the City Park in Robinson, but the full schedule was not available by press time.
Quinn Wadkins tied the game at 10 in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run double, and Brett Mueller launched the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning for a game-winning grand slam as Vandalia swept the doubleheader.
Salem took a 10-6 lead going to the seventh inning, but Vandalia loaded the bases with one out.
Nate Ketchem drew a bases-loaded walk, Brock Trexler brought in a run on a fielder’s choice and Wadkins stroked the game-tying two-out double to left.
Post 95 left two runners on base in the eighth, and Salem added two runs in the ninth.
Vandalia (20-7, 7-1 D) would tie the game after Trexler opened the ninth with a double and scored on a wild pitch. Then, Wadkins walked, Noah Powless doubled and Ryan Miller singled to load the bases, and Dalton Crisman drove in a run with a walk.
Drake Hall came in to relieve, but Mueller drove his first pitch over the fence for his first home run of the summer.
Powless became the 11th pitcher to earn a win for the team, tossing the final inning. He was one of six pitchers used in the game, and also hit his third home run of the summer.
