Positively better on Fourth Street

With only a few details remaining to be completed, Vandalia residents now can see what the streetscape project will do to improve the appearance of the 100 and 200 blocks of South Fourth Street.
And it’s significant.
The new sidewalks are a huge improvement (for cosmetics appearance as well as pedestrian safety), the period lighting ties those blocks into the improvements made on Gallatin Street and the asphalt overlay gives the street a like-new appearance.
Overall, quite an improvement. And, as an added bonus, the $650,000 grant-funded project came in under budget.
Mayor Rick Gottman told the Vandalia City Council this week that he has received authorization from state officials to use the remaining funds to purchase additional light posts and benches for use on Fifth Street when that phase of the project is undertaken.
We applaud the city and the contractor for bringing the Fourth Street project in under budget. And we look forward to the benefits that their frugality will have on jump-starting work on Fifth Street – and possibly Sixth Street.
The city has been adamant about using only grant money for this project. That way, it doesn't negatively impact the city's efforts to live within its trimmed-down budget. Let’s see if we can secure another grant to finish the job.
