In 1964, Ron Etcheson was an eighth grader at Vandalia Junior High School. On April 24 of that year, he set the record for the 220-yard dash with a time of 24.6 seconds. In the days after his record-breaking run, Jim Staff, who at the time was the regional superintendent of schools, came and congratulated Etcheson on his accomplishment. The moment stuck in Etcheson mind for years to come.
