Orrell’s late hit gives Warriors Ramsey Tournament title

RAMSEY – Senior Jake Orrell stroked a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie with Brownstown for the winning runs last Friday in the championship game of the Ramsey Tournament.

After struggling in game one of the tournament, Orrell drove in four runs in the final two games, and coach Joe Eddy is hopeful that is a sign that Orrell can help Patoka to a strong season.

“We put him in the No. 2 hole that first game, then we moved him down,” Eddy said. “Then, we were talking, and we decided that if we are going to be successful (as a team), he needs to be in the No. 2 spot.”

The game was a pitcher’s duel through the first three innings, with Brownstown senior Austin Hunter and Patoka senior Clinton Hood each pitching themselves out of jams.

The Bombers scored first, however, with Calvin Boggs singled, and Jacob Behrends following with a triple to right.

Behrends also made a diving catch on one of the hardest hit balls of the game to save the Bombers a couple of runs.

Patoka (3-1) got that run back on an RBI double from senior Quinn Wadkins in the fifth. It was the second hit of the game for Wadkins.

Brownstown (2-1) threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting two runners aboard on back-to-back Patoka errors, but Hood induced two fly outs to end the rally and give the Warriors the championship.

“It was a good momentum-builder to start the season, because we figured we should win the tournament,” Eddy said. “Brownstown made us work harder than we anticipated, which was good, because we needed a game where any mistake would lose it for you.”
