Vandalia wins 11 events at Pana, wins meet

The Vandalia boys track and field team won its second straight meet on Thursday, scoring 89 points to defeat Greenville (59) and Pana (34).

 

Vandalia had 11 first-place finishes, sweeping the relays and the hurdles and taking the top three spots in the shot put.  

 

In the field events, Angel Osorio won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches. Will Cowger won the shot put for the third straight time and fourth time this season. His best heave was 47 feet, 8 inches. Marty Johnson took first in the discus for the second time in two meets at 114 feet, 6 inches. He placed second in the shot put at 40 feet, 10 ½ inches.

 

Quenten Austin, who placed second in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), swept the hurdles for Vandalia, running a wind-aided 16.06 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 45.57 in the 300-meter hurdles.

 

After finishing as high as second this season, Matt Hubbart finally won the 1600-meter run, running the metrie mile in 5:38. He placed second at Litchfield on March 30 with a time of  5:28.6.

 

Daniel Bell won the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:20.

 

Vandalia won all four of the relays. Tim Ritchey, Blake Swofford, Ryan Ambuehl and Osorio won the 4x100 in 48.2; Ritchey, Will Cowger, Codee Street and Swofford won the 4x200 in 1:43.3; Austin, Bell, Osorio and Ambuehl won the 4x400-relay in 4:24.6; and Bell, Wade Cowger, Hubbart and Michael Wells won the 4x800 in 11:34.

 

Swofford came in second in the long jump at 18 feet, 8 inches. Drew Stewart placed third in the shot put (40 feet, 8 ½ inches) and in the discus (106 feet, 5 ½ inches).

 

The Vandals meet at Mater Dei on Monday was canceled due to rain.

 

Vandalia will be on the track again at Greenville on Thursday at 4 p.m. The freshmen and sophomores will compete at the frosh/soph conference meet on Saturday at Litchfield at 9 a.m. On Tuesday, Vandalia will compete in the conference meet at Pana, starting at 4:30 p.m.
