For the second consecutive year, the Vandalia Board of Education will not include funding for the position of Vandalia Community High School band director Tony Hicks in the district's budget.
And, also for the second year, band parents and others have organized a series of fundraisers to provide the $55,000 needed to maintain that position.
The largest event in that effort will be held next Thursday, March 27, when all of the district’s bands will perform in a concert called “A Night of Music – The Sequel.”
Sponsored by The Leader-Union and WPMB/WKRV, the evening also includes a silent auction, discounted St. Louis Cardinal tickets and a wide variety of food.
Doors to the VCHS gymnasium will open at 5 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
Though no one will be turned away if they can't pay, adults will be asked to make a $10 donation to get into the concert, and students (ages 13-18) will be asked to make a $5 donation. Children, ages 12 and under, are free.
A special performance during the concert will be presented by country music singer Gracia Harrison of Springfield, a friend of Vandalia Junior High School band director Sara Berg. Harrison was a performer on season three of "The Voice."
Donations are welcome at the concert, or by mailing checks to: Vandalia Community High School, attention Tony Hicks, 1109 N. Eighth St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471. Checks should be payable to OCF-VAF, and “Vandalia School Bands” should be written on the memo line.
