Many athletes that spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

Kinzie Neilson • Freshman • Lincoln Land

•Neilson, a South Central graduate, and Lincoln Land begin play in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national championship tournament on Thursday. The eighth-seeded Loggers (31-7) take on No. 9 Kansas City Kansas Community College (30-6) at 1 p.m. in Toledo, Ohio. Cowley County CC (Kansas) is the No. 1 seed, with a 35-0 record.

Jessica Earnest • Senior • Vanderbilt

•Earnest, a Vandalia graduate, and the Vanderbilt University bowling team placed fifth at the Crusader Classic at Valparaiso this past weekend. Earnest averaged 196.2 over five games, including a high of 214. The Commodores travel to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore for the Hawk Classic starting on Friday.

Marty Johnson • Sophomore • Illinois College

•Johnson, a Vandalia graduate, and the Illinois College basketball team open the season at home on Friday for the Bill Merris Tournament. The Blueboys take on Blackburn at 7:30 p.m.

Isaac Grapperhaus • Senior • Illinois College

•Grapperhaus, a South Central graduate, and the Illinois College basketball team open the season at home on Friday for the Bill Merris Tournament. The Blueboys take on Blackburn at 7:30 p.m.

Laura Hobbie • Senior • Greenville

•Hobbie, a Vandalia graduate, will begin her final college season on Friday at the Westminister (Mo.) Tip-Off Classic. The Panthers battle Rhodes at 1 p.m.
