Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.
Quenten Austin • Freshman • Carthage
•May 3-4 – Austin, a Vandalia graduate, earned the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title in the Decathlon at the CCIW Outdoor Championships. Austin scored 6,230 points to beat the second-place finisher, who had 6,170 points. Austin placed first in three of the 10 decathlon events, and placed in the top three in four others. His individual event finishes were:
•110-meter hurdles, first, :16.47
•Discus, first, 118-11
•High jump, first, 6-0 1/2
•Shot put, second, 37-7 1/4
•Javelin, second, 151-3
•1,500-meter run, second, 4:38.58
•Pole vault, third, 12-7 1/2
•400-meter dash, fifth, :52.71
•Long jump, fifth, 19-11 3/4
•100-meter dash, 12th, :12.11
Carthage finished third at the meet with 154 points.
Spencer Patton • Pitcher • Wilmington Blue Rocks
•May 3 – Patton, a South Central graduate, picked up his third win of the season in a 1-0 win at Lynchburg. Patton tossed three innings of relief, striking out five and allowing just one hit and one walk. The Kansas City Royals prospect is now 3-0 for Class A Wilmington.
Logan Mahon • Pitcher • Gateway Grizzlies
•Mahon, a St. Elmo graduate, and the Gateway Grizzlies began spring training last week and had their first preseason game on Tuesday. The independent Frontier League regular season begins for Gateway on May 17 in Avon, Ohio, against the Lake Erie Crushers.
Abby Hill • Sophomore • Greenville
•May 3 – Hill, a St. Elmo graduate, placed 12th in the hammer throw preliminaries at the National Christian College Athletic Association Outdoor Championships in Joliet. Her throw of 129 feet, 3 inches fell three spots short of making the finals.
Dathan Berning • Freshman • Greenville
•May 1 – Berning, a Vandalia graduate, had three hits in two wins at Millikin. In game one, an 8-6 win for Greenville, Berning was 1-for-3, with a run. In game two, a 9-7 win, he was 2-for-4, with an RBI. Greenville is 16-19 on the season.
Cheyenne Rogier • Freshman • Lewis and Clark
•April 29 – Rogier, a Mulberry Grove graduate, had a hit in both games of a doubleheader against John Wood Community College. In game one, an 8-4 loss, Rogier was 1-for-3, with an RBI. In game two, a 6-5 loss, she was 1-for-3, with an RBI and a run.
