The Next Level: Graduated athlete roundup (Feb. 28)

Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

Laura Hobbie • Senior • Greenville

•Feb. 19 – Hobbie, a Vandalia graduate, played in her final collegiate game for Greenville College, a 62-42 conference win at Fontbonne. She scored a game-high 21 points, and had a team-high eight rebounds. She also added two steals and an assist.  Greenville finished 13-12 on the season and 8-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Jessica Earnest • Senior • Vanderbilt

•Feb. 22-24 – Earnest, a Vandalia graduate, helped Vanderbilt University to a third-place finish at the Alabama A&M Holiday Classic this past weekend. Individually, she had a high-game of 208 on the second day of the event, but the Commodores went into the championship bracket with the No. 1 seed. There, fifth-ranked Vanderbilt would fall twice before defeating Alabama A&M, 4-1, in the third-place match. The Commodores are back in action this weekend at the Great Ozark Invitational in Kansas City.

Quenten Austin • Freshman • Carthage

•Feb. 23 – Austin, a Vandalia graduate, participated in two events at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Championships. In the 55-meter hurdles, he placed eighth in the finals, with a time of :08.27. In the heptathlon, Austin placed fourth, setting a personal record with 4,533 points, besting his previous mark by more than 400 points. Among the seven events, Austin placed no worse than sixth in all but one event. His finishes were: high jump, first, 6 feet, 1/2 inches; 55-meter hurdles, second, :08.44; shot put, second, 37 feet, 8 1/2 inches; long jump, third, 20 feet, 9 1/4 inches; pole vault, sixth, 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches; 1,000-meter run, sixth, 2:55.2; and 55-meter dash, 10th, :07.08. No. 25 Carthage placed third in the event, and will be hosting the Gill Athletics Final Qualifier this weekend.

Dathan Berning • Freshman • Greenville

•Berning, a Vandalia graduate, and the Greenville College baseball team open the spring season on Friday with a double-header against Dubuque at 1 p.m.

Trevor Montgomery • Frosh • Fontbonne

•Montgomery, a Vandalia graduate, and the Fontbonne College baseball team open the spring season on Thursday at Washington (Mo.) at 3 p.m.

Whitney Newsom • Soph. • Greenville

•Newsom, a Vandalia graduate, and the Greenville College softball team open the spring season on Saturday with a double-header at Stephens at noon.

Harley Tompkins • Freshman • Parkland

•Tompkins, a Mulberry Grove graduate, and the Parkland College softball team will open the spring season next Tuesday at Rend Lake College at 2 p.m.

Cheyenne Rogier • Freshman • Lewis and Clark

•Rogier, a Mulberry Grove graduate, and the Lewis and Clark College softball team will open the spring season next Monday with a double-header at East Central at 2 p.m.
