City OKs bids for properties

Meeting in special session on Monday night, the Vandalia City Council accepted bids on two city-owned tracts of land in the city's western Interstate 70 interchange.
Rick Cripe was the only bidder for 3.104 acres of land, with a bid of $31,500. Cripe submitted with his bid the required 10-percent down payment of $3,150.
Michael Cripe of Midwest Tractor Sales, formerly Vandalia Tractor Sales, submitted the only bid for 6.26 acres of land, $62,011. Under the bidding requirements, Cripe was to make a down payment within 72 hours of being notified that he was the successful bidder.
Both tracts of land are located south of Walmart and west of the Vandalia Common strip mall in the southwest I-70 quadrant.

Museum has several August exhibits

The special exhibits for August in the Fayette County Museum in Vandalia feature historic documents from the museum’s collection that are only displayed occasionally; labor and industry in early Vandalia, the Depression era and mid-1900s; and the popular Tanner Drive-In exhibit, which is being held over another month.
A total of 217 visitors were welcomed at the museum in July. Groups included Quest School from Mt. Vernon, Homemakers Extension from the Pocahontas area and a Boy Scout group from Fairfax, Va.
Tickets are now available for the Season of Events. This season’s events are: Martha Washington, presented on Sept. 16 by Barbara Kay of Glen Carbon; Historical Family Stories, presented on Nov. 4 by storyteller Linda Dust of Assumption; and French Creole Traditional Music and History, presented by Dennis A. Stroughmatt of Albion on Jan. 13, 2013, when he entertains with his fiddle.
Restoration continues in the museum’s upstairs area. Gooseberry pies may still be ordered from the museum. To schedule tours, order pies or tickets, call 283-4866.

St. Elmo plans second kickball tourney

The St. Elmo Tourism Committee announced this week that it will hold its second kickball tournament as part of the community's Labor Day weekend celebration.
The tournament will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Deken Park, located across from St. Elmo High School on the St. Elmo Blacktop.
The entry fee is $25 per team, and registrations are being accepted at St. Elmo City Hall.

St. Elmo holding Labor Day Celebration

St. Elmo will hold its annual Labor Day Celebration on Saturday-Monday, Sept. 1-3.
The celebration kicks off with a Guns and Hoses softball game featuring police and firefighters at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Deken Park.
On Sunday, the gospel band "Water to Wine" will perform at St. Elmo Christian Church.
The Monday festivities begin with the annual pancake breakfast at the St. Elmo Fire Station from 6-9:30 a.m., and also include a parade at 10:30 a.m.
The afternoon activities include musical entertainment, a watermelon contest and bingo at 1 p.m., watermelon eating and seed-spitting contests at 3 p.m., the Effingham County Sportsman's Club cowboy re-enactors at 3:30 p.m. and the St. Elmo Lions Club cake walk at 5:30 p.m.
The city's Citizen of the Year will be announced at 6:15 p.m., and "St. Elmo's Got Talent" begins at 6:30 p.m.

St. Elmo Library asking for recipes

The St. Elmo Public Library District, which includes library facilities in St. Elmo, Beecher City and Brownstown, is putting together a cookbook, and it needs the help of area residents to accomplish that task.
The district is asking residents to submit recipes for the cookbook. Those wishing to contribute recipes may either submit them at one of the library facilities or e-mail them to sbbcookbook@gmail.com.
Each person may submit up to five recipes.
The district is producing the cookbook to raise funds for a program through which it can loan e-books to residents.

Food Pantry in St. Elmo on Aug. 25

The Central Illinois Food Pantry will be in the parking lot of Pinnacle Foods in St. Elmo on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Food distribution will begin at 10 a.m., rain or shine.
Food is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, for families and individuals in need of assistance.
Those going to the distribution are asked to take bags, baskets or boxes for their food.

'St. Elmo's Got Talent' entries accepted

Entries for the talent contest held during St. Elmo's Labor Day Celebration are now being accepted.
Entries for "St. Elmo's Got Talent" are being accepted through Aug. 26, with the first 20 entries being allowed to compete.
The registration fee is $5 for individuals and $10 for groups. Cash prizes being awarded are: first, $150; second, $75; and third, $50.
Applications should be turned in at Shannon's Style Shop.
The performers will be allowed to sing one song or have five minutes to show another type of talent.

Vandalia's Trick-or-Treat Night set

The Vandalia City Council voted on Monday to set Saturday, Oct. 27, as Trick-or-Treat Night in Vandalia.
On that evening, children up through sixth grade will be allowed to go trick-or-treating from 6-8 p.m.
