When Ashley Metzger Miller decided to open her own day spa, there was no question where it would be. It had to be in the Metzger Building at 522 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia.
After all, the building was built by her great-great grandfather, John M. Metzger, in 1903. For decades, it was Metzger’s Motel. Then, in recent years, it housed an attorney’s office, followed by Land of Lincoln credit union, where her father, Tim Metzger, is the manager. It’s been vacant since the credit union moved to a new location a few years ago. It was the perfect location for her business – All About You Day Spa.
The renovation of the building began last July, with workers taking it down to the studs and building it back.
“It was a huge project,” Miller said, “but now everything is brand new. We wanted it to look classy and very modern. It’s a different look than any other spa in Vandalia.”
The facility opened Jan. 11, and offers a variety of services – facials, massage, body treatments (scrubs and wraps), nails (manicures, pedicures), makeup, waxing and tanning.
Miller, who is a licensed esthetician, is joined in the business by Elaine Feezel (a massage therapist), Mindy Roe (a makeup artist and licensed esthetician) and Cinde Ward (a licensed nail technician).
Miller went to school at New Image Technical Center and has worked at other spas in the area. But she always had her eye on the Metzger building.
“I wanted to be in this building, because it’s family,” she said. “It just seemed right to have a family business in here. And starting my own spa allows me to be my own boss, to do things on my own.”
To officially launch the business, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held this Thursday at noon.
The spa is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Evening hours are also available by appointment. The telephone number is 283-9020. The spa’s website is www.allaboutyoudayspa.net.
