Ashley Murray of Washington, Ill., completed the Licensed Practical Nurse program at Kaskaskia College’s Vandalia Education Center and received her LPN certificate in a pinning ceremony held at the center on Nov. 22.

Before she was pinned, she was crowned National American Miss Illinois, in September 2010, and competed in the National American Miss USA pageant in Hollywood last November, where she finished in the top 10.
Murray, who would eventually like to become an emergency room nurse, plans to resume her studies at Kaskaskia College in the near future, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse.
“I chose to start my education at KC right after I moved to Carlyle,” she said.  “My older sister went through the RN program there, and I heard nothing but great things about the programs and how challenging it was.
“The environment and the staff are all amazing, and so many classes are offered to work around your busy lifestyle,” Murray said.
“The LPN program at Vandalia was particularly wonderful. The teachers are so helpful, and they challenge you every day to make you the best nurse you can be.”
She still lives in Carlyle, and is currently busy job searching and studying for her state boards.
“I am very excited about my career,” she said, “but I’m anxious to start back to school to further my dreams of becoming an RN.”
But school and work aren’t her only goals.
“I plan to get back to the pageant world in the near future,” Murray said.
“Next year, my goal is to compete for Miss Illinois USA. Once a pageant girl, always a pageant girl.”
