Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament – Area recap

Patoka takes second with win vs. Cowden-Herrick

After losing the first game of the tournament, Patoka rallied four straight wins, taking second place on Saturday with a 65-48 win against Cowden-Herrick in the last game of the 11th annual Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament.

All-tournament selection Johnnie Clift had his fifth strong game of the event, scoring a game-high 19 points, and senior Seth Allen and freshman Jered Cain finished with 15.

Cain was also an all-tournament selection.

The Warriors (4-1) took control of the game in the second half, turning a 28-28 halftime tie into a 51-37 lead by the end of the third period.

In that quarter, Clift scored 11 points, and Cain added seven. Allen did most of his damage in the first eight minutes, scoring seven points.

Colton Burrus had a team-high 17 points for the Hornets (2-3).

Rams finish fourth by beating Mulberry Grove

Ramsey finished off its run at the Turkey Tournament on Saturday with a 63-55 victory against Mulberry Grove.

The Rams (2-3) scored 43 points in the second half to erase a five-point halftime deficit.

Ahead by one going to the fourth quarter, Ramsey scored 20 points – despite missing five free throws – to secure the win.

Senior all-tournament selection Tylor Knisley had a game-high 19 points for Ramsey, and junior Michael Camez added a career-high 18.

For Mulberry Grove (1-4) – the sixth-place finisher – junior all-tournament selection Damian Latham had 19 points – including a 7-for-7 mark from the free-throw line – and sophomore Ty James added 11.

Aces can learn from loss to Odin

MULBERRY GROVE – Sophomore Ty James played the best half of his young career over the first 16 minutes of last Friday’s game against Odin.

But after picking up his fourth foul just 35 seconds into the third period, the Aces had to scramble to pick up the slack, but they couldn’t keep up with the fast-paced Eagles, who took a 65-46 victory.

James had piled up 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the first half, helping to keep the deficit reasonable by halftime.

“Ty was pretty much our offense in the first half,” said coach Bobby Koontz. “Ty is a force, and if he wants to score, he’s going to score.

“That was the best I had seen from him in the tournament, but we need to see it every night.”

James did not play again in the third period, as Odin expanded its 28-21 halftime to lead to 45-34.

He added two more rebounds, a block and a free throw before fouling out with 1:19 left in the game, and he finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“Ty has to realize he can’t pick up fouls,” Koontz said. “He is a big part of what we are trying to do.”

James – who is in his first year as a regular starter – has shown a lot of promise, scoring at least 11 points in three of the first four games, and as he matures, has the potential to become one of the best post players in the area.

His absence didn’t have an immediate effect, however, as the Aces opened the second half on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 31 with 4:23 left in the quarter, but they would only score two more points the rest of the way.

The run came on the heels of a big stop on the final possession of the first half, which saw the Aces hold Odin without a strong look at the basket in the last 26 seconds.

“It really did translate,” Koontz said. “They realized that they held them for 30 seconds without a shot.”

But the fourth quarter was all Odin, as the Eagles (4-0) added another 20 points.

Junior Damian Latham scored a team-high 16 points for the Aces (1-3), and freshman Jack Criner had seven points and eight rebounds.

But the emergence of Odin senior Chase Horton was too much to overcome.

Horton, who had scored just 15 total points in the first three tournament games, exploded for 30 points, 19 of which came in the second half.

Ramsey comeback falls short vs. Patoka

MULBERRY GROVE – Ramsey fought until the end of the game, but even doubling up Patoka in the fourth quarter wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit.

The Rams outscored Patoka, 18-9, in the fourth period, but still fell short in the 58-49 loss.

“We didn’t play to the best of our ability tonight,” said Patoka coach Joey Eddy. “It wasn’t any one person or any one thing – it was just an off day after a couple of victories.

“No matter who you are playing, you have to battle, and luckily we figured that out in time to build a lead that we could sustain.”

The Warriors (3-1) were ahead, 30-18, at halftime, and extended that lead to 49=31 by the end of the third period.

Ramsey, however, would make three 3-pointers as part of an 11-0 run to open the final quarter. Two of those 3-pointers came after a Patoka turnover.

“We thought the game was over and that they would roll over when we got ahead,” Eddy said. “They battled to the end, and that’s what you want to see.”

Ramsey also outrebounded Patoka, 29-25.

Senior Johnnie Clift scored 19 points to lead the game for Patoka, and he also added nine rebounds, eight of which came in the first half. Freshman Jered Cain had a balanced game, with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.

For the Rams (1-3), senior Ryan Kelly had 13 points, and senior Tristan Wesselman added a team-high eight rebounds.

Barrage of 3-pointers gives MG/CH game exciting finish

A combined nine 3-pointers were made in the fourth quarter as Mulberry Grove and Cowden-Herrick wrapped up a wild finish to day three of the Turkey Tournament.

Mulberry Grove junior Damian Latham scored 18 fourth-quarter points, senior Dalton Crisman made five 3-pointers in the game and the Aces stood strong as Cowden-Herrick made a late rally with five 3s in a 1:40 span late in the fourth quarter of last Wednesday’s contest.

After it was all settled, Mulberry Grove has its first win of the tournament, with a 75-72 triumph.

“We just shot the lights out, that’s all you can say,” said coach Bobby Koontz.

The Aces (1-2) led by nine before the Hornets scored their barrage of 3-pointers, two of which were hit by Colton Burrus, who had 35 points, and two more were made by Dylan Barnes, who had 21 in the game.

Latham nailed three of Mulberry Grove’s fourth-quarter 3-pointers, and also connected on 9-of-10 free throws on his way to tying his career-high, with 23 points.

Crisman added the other trey in the fourth period, and his 17 points were easily a career-high.

Sophomore Ty James added 13 points, including eight in the second quarter, to help Mulberry Grove to a 35-31 halftime lead.

Warriors thump Sandoval

MULBERRY GROVE – Patoka coach Joey Eddy did an experiment during last Wednesday’s game against Sandoval.
With two fouls early in the second quarter, Eddy sent leading seniors Johnnie Clift and Seth Allen to the bench.

“We got into foul trouble, and probably didn’t have to sit them, with two fouls, but we sat our top two scorers with two fouls to see what it was like,” Eddy said. “They responded to it in the second half by not picking up any stupid fouls.”

And that also helped the Warriors get their second win of the Turkey Tournament, as Allen and Clift paced the team in scoring during the 72-44 victory.

Allen scored 15 points for Patoka (2-1), and Clift added 13, while junior Tyler Back put in 10. Ten players scored for the Warriors, who played everyone on their roster in the blowout.

The game was never in question, with Patoka leading by at least nine for most of the first half, and then outscoring the Eagles, 20-6, in the third quarter.

Patoka’s only blemish was closing out the first half, when the team turned over the ball on seven of eight possessions in the final 2:58.

“We had some concerns because we were turning the ball over, but we also didn’t have a group out there who had played together, even in practice,” Eddy said. “That goes a long way.”

The miscues didn’t translate to the second half, as Sandoval did not score any points off of turnovers in the third quarter.

Knisley’s big night not enough to beat Odin

The Rams got 28 points from senior Tylor Knisley, but couldn’t get past high-powered Odin last Wednesday in a 76-54 loss.

Knisley made 12 field goals in the game, scoring nine of his points in the fourth quarter, and getting at least six points in every period for the Rams (1-2).

But a balanced scoring effort by Odin left them ahead by double digits for almost the entire game.

Ike Margrum, Austin Perkins and Devin Williams each had 15 points for the Eagles (3-0), who also got 11 points from Ryan Niepotter.
