Montgomery picks Fontbonne

Trevor Montgomery, a 2012 Vandalia Community High School graduate, on Wednesday signed his admissions letter to Fontbonne University, where he plans to play baseball.

He is the second player from his class to sign with an NCAA Division III school in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, joining Dathan Berning, who recently signed with Greenville College.

Montgomery, who had at least a share of the team MVP award the past two high school seasons, recently completed a 34-game season with the Central Illinois Stars traveling team, which is based in Bloomington.

The Stars played in tournaments in Peoria, Decatur, Bloomington, Branson, Mo., and Fort Wayne, Ind.

Montgomery was one of the team's leading hitters and also pitched for the Stars.

During the high school season, Montgomery had somewhat of a down year, hitting just .274, but he did have a .408 on-base percentage and had 12 RBI.

He homered twice for the Vandals and scored 11 runs, and Montgomery was tied for the team lead in quality at-bats, with 58 percent.

At Fontbonne, Montgomery will join a program that has a history of success.

Based in St. Louis, the Griffins have won at least 20 games in four of the past five seasons, and were the No. 2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament this past spring.

Fontbonne is coached by Ryan Good, who has led the program since the 2007 season.

Good's year-by-year records follow.

2007: 22-17
2008: 15-19
2009: 25-19
2010: 21-20
2011: 18-25
2012: 20-23
Career: 121-123
