Midland Trail volleyball title goes to South Central

The South Central High School volleyball team finished with a perfect season in the Midland Trail Conference after winning the conference tournament last Friday.

The win marked South Central's fourth straight in the tournament, and also marked the final MTC Tournament for the Lady Cougars (28-4), who next season will participate in the National Trail Conference

It took the Lady Cougars three sets to get the championship game win against Woodlawn, winning the first set, 25-20; losing the second, 20-25; and winning the third, 15-5.

Seniors Emily Atwood and Kinzie Neilson both had 10 kills in the match, senior Natalie Chapman added four service aces, and senior Sarah Kramer had 19 assists.

Coming into the tourney, South Central was 26-4, with a 9-0 MTC record, and Woodlawn was 21-3, with an 8-1 MTC record. Woodlawn's lone loss came to South Central, 25-17, 25-22 in the season-opener.

In the semifinals, South Central also found a tough match, beating Clay City/Noble in two sets, 26-24, 25-23.
Neilson was again strong at the net, killing off 12 points, and Atwood was right behind with nine.

From the service line, Kramer scored 11 points, and Lexi Schafer added 10. Kramer led the team with 19 assists.

In pool play last Thursday, South Central had little trouble, dispatching all three opponents in two sets.

In the first game, Webber was defeated, 25-9, 25-10. Kramer had 12 service points, and Neilson had five kills.

South Central then defeated North Clay, 25-11, 25-18. Kellie Crain had six kills, and Kramer had 13 service points.

In the final pool play game, the Lady Cougars beat Wayne City, 25-17, 25-19. Atwood and Kallie Garrett both had seven kills, and Schafer had 13 service points.

As a warm-up for the tournament, South Central played Class 3A Centralia last Tuesday, beating the Orphan Annies, 23-25, 25-13, 25-12.

The 1A Lady Cougars were led by Kramer's 32 service points and Atwood's 12 kills. Kramer and Chapman both had 11 assists.

South Central returns to action on Tuesday at the regional tournament. Playing at home, the top-seeded Lady Cougars will battle either No. 3 North Clay or No. 6 Mulberry Grove.
