The 11th annual Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament will be held next week, with three local teams participating.

Mulberry Grove, Ramsey and Patoka will be joined by Cowden-Herrick, Odin and Sandoval for the event, which will be held each day next week, except for Thanksgiving.

Patoka is the favorite to win the event, but coach Joey Eddy said that his team will still have to show up and play.

“We expect to win it,” he said.  “We have Odin right off the bat, and they beat us once last year, even though we beat them by 20 twice.

“They have everybody back, with a bunch of juniors and seniors.”

Patoka was 2-2 in last season’s event, and lost to Odin, 55-42, in the third-place game.

This year, the tournament has shrunk from eight teams to six, and will just be played at Mulberry Grove High School. In the past couple of seasons, the tournament has been split between Mulberry Grove and Ramsey.

Brownstown beat Christ Our Rock Lutheran in last season’s title game, but neither are in this year’s field.
Mulberry Grove coach Bobby Koontz also expects Patoka and Odin to be the top two teams in the field.

“I think it will be a good tournament,” he said. “Patoka is probably the strongest team coming in, but Odin will be all right.

“After that, it’s up in the air,” Koontz said. “It should be a good week of basketball for all the teams.”

His Aces were 1-3 last season to finish sixth, the win coming against Sandoval.

Ramsey will be looking to improve on its standing from last season after going 1-3 to place seventh.

Coach Rodney Hunt said controlling opponents’ runs will be key to his team’s success.

“I would hope that we can challenge for first place – as long as we can compete in each game,” Hunt said.
