EAST PEORIA - Vandalia eighth-grader Emma Meyer placed fourth in the pole vault state finals on Saturday, clearing a school record 9 feet, 9 inches.

Vaulting at the Illinois Elementary School Association state finals at the EastSide Centre, Meyer was one of four vaulters to make it to 9-9, but she was unable to get over 10 feet.

But with a school record and a top-five finish, Meyer said she was still pleased with her day.

She also qualified for state in the 100-meter dash, making Friday's semifinals, and the 200-meter dash, which she scratched out of due to a time conflict with the pole vault.

Much more information about Meyer's day will be available in the May 25 edition of The Leader-Union.
