MCS Counseling adds new therapist

MCS Counseling of Vandalia has added a new therapist, Karen Gilmore, to its counseling staff.

A recent graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Gilmore holds a master’s degree in social work and has met all the criteria for her Licensed Social Work certification.
She is the mother of four children and also has been a pastor’s wife for many years before her husband began working at Greenville College, where he is now dean of student success.
She has worked in the registrar’s office at Greenville College, and has experience as a caseworker, providing training and support to caregivers of seniors and assisting clients who are transitioning through Medicare Part D changes.
“Karen is a deeply caring person and is dedicated to her work,” said Dr. Melanie Schaafsma, owner of MCS  Counseling and a counselor herself. “We are so lucky to have her with us. She has integrity and is a wonderful addition to our group.”
Prior to joining MCS  Counseling, Gilmore served as an intern and presented a workshop at the annual National Association of Mental Illness meeting at SIUE. Her workshop was titled “Demystifying the Process of Obtaining Therapeutic Services for Children.” During her internship, she counseled a variety of clients, and, she said, she  “learned to respect, on a deep level, the role that faith plays in others’ lives.”
Her research and studies have prepared her to work with people of all ages who experience difficulties with depression, anxiety, anger management, grief, sleep problems, addictions, and interpersonal and family relationships.
MCS Counseling has expanded to both 1404 and 1406 N. Fifth St. in Vandalia. Gilmore’s office is located at 1406 N. Fifth St. The telephone number is 283-2883.
