McCarter: VCC Work Camp may be restarted

Springfield – The now closed Work Camp program at Vandalia Correctional Center may be restarting in the coming weeks, according to State Sen. Kyle McCarter.  Sen. McCarter and Vandalia Mayor Ricky Gottman have been working with the Illinois Department of Corrections (DOC) to restart the Work Camp.

“It’s a win-win situation,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon).  “It’s good for offenders to get out and work, and be helpful to our communities while at the same time it gives them a source of personal pride and accomplishment.  The inmates want to be part of this program.”

Vandalia Mayor Ricky Gottman is also excited about the possibility of restarting the Work Camp and has been working with McCarter to see it come to pass.

"The Vandalia Prison is a key component of Vandalia society,” said Mayor Gottman.  “It's good to see we can help each other in this way."

Although a date has not been officially set, it could begin within a month, just in time for spring activities.  Restarting the program would mean that prison work crews would again be able to care for cemeteries, provide work support for civic functions and other community projects.

Sen. McCarter toured the Vandalia Correctional Center Thursday, March 28.
