“I’m the only Illinois senator with an office in the current state capitol and an office across the street from the oldest capitol.”
With that quip, State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) announced this week that he has closed his offices in Highland and Decatur, and will establish his main district office in Vandalia.
Located near the center of the newly drawn 54th State Senate District, the Vandalia office is at 310 W. Gallatin St. – the former location of Real Living, Vandalia Real Estate.
“I’m happy to be in Vandalia,” McCarter told The Leader-Union on Tuesday. “Everybody here has been so supportive in the past. I’ve been asked many times to open an office here.”
Even though he’ll be down to a single office, McCarter has plans to stay in touch with residents in the district’s eight counties by using technology to conduct “virtual” meetings.
“Thank God for technology,” he said. “We plan to use Skype to have face-to-face conversations with people across the district. We’ll move the actual meetings around – to city halls, Farm Bureau offices, anywhere with Wi-Fi.”
The new 54th district includes all or parts of the following counties: Madison, St. Clair, Washington, Clinton, Bond, Fayette, Marion and Effingham.
Tara Hall, McCarter’s executive assistant for the past three years, is from Vandalia. She’ll keep the office open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The telephone number for the new office is 283-3000.
