Extreme heat would not have deterred Joseph Thomas from his duties in the militia during the War of 1812. Neither did it deter descendants and members of the United States Daughters of 1812 and Illinois Society of the War of 1812 from commemorating his service.
Jessie Maas, a member of the Kaskaskia Chapter USD1812, from Vandalia, planned the ceremony held at the Little Flock Cemetery in Flat Branch Township, Shelby County.
