Locked car doors prevent break-ins

The Vandalia Police Department has reported handling numerous reports of vehicle break-ins in recent weeks. But, in most of those cases, the perpetrators didn’t actually have to break into the vehicles.
Addressing the Vandalia City Council on Monday night, VPD Sgt. Jeff Ray said that some residents are not making it difficult for criminals to steal their property.
“With almost every vehicle break-in, the vehicle was unlocked,” Ray said.
Ray encouraged local residents to lock their vehicles, to help prevent break-ins, and to also help the police catch burglars by reporting any suspicious activity.
We echo Ray’s recommendation, adding that residents need to also make an effort to secure their homes and any outbuildings.
For many, many years, one of the luxuries of living in a small town was that we didn’t have to lock our doors. Obviously, that’s no longer true.
There are individuals out there who have no respect for other people’s property, and they are willing to steal whatever they can get their hands on.
We don’t need to make it easier for them to do that.
