The Leader-Union received six awards in the annual Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Southern Illinois Editorial Association.
The awards were presented at the organization’s annual meeting on April 26 at Giant City State Park.
The Leader-Union received first place in Best Use of Photography, third place in Best Original Column (Publisher Dave Bell for a column about a cheap hit in a football game), and honorable mentions in Best Newspaper Design, Best Editorial Page, General Excellence and Best Feature Photo (Bell for a photo of a bull rider at the Fayette County Fair).
“We’ve worked hard to improve the photographic coverage of events throughout Fayette County,” said Bell. “Managing Editor Rich Bauer and Sports Editor Andrew Harner are first-rate photographers, and it’s gratifying to see their efforts recognized by the first-place award in Best Use of Photography.
“The other awards also indicate that we’re making a difference in our community on several fronts.”
The competition included weekly and daily newspapers from the southern half of Illinois. Many of the categories were open competition, in which entries were competing   against those from newspapers of all sizes and frequencies. In other contests, The Leader-Union competed in the large weekly category.
Also at the SIEA annual meeting, Bell was given SIEA’s Master Editor award for achievements during his 25-year career at The Leader-Union. He was president of SIEA in 1995-96.
