Leader-Union wins seven awards in SIEA contest

The Leader-Union received seven awards for news, photography and advertising excellence in a recent contest sponsored by the Southern Illinois Editorial Association.
The results were announced at the association’s annual meeting on April 27 at Giant City State Park in Makanda. The Leader-Union competed against all large weekly papers in the southern half of Illinois.
In each category, prizes were awarded for first, second and third places, as well as honorable mention. All prizes were for entries published in 2011.
Heading The Leader-Union’s winnings was a second-place award in Advertising Excellence.
The paper also received an honorable mention award in the General Excellence category. In that competition, The Leader-Union received a total of 518 points in six areas of competition – with a maximum of 100 points available in each category. Third place was 525, second place was 535 and first place was 552.
The balance of The Leader-Union’s awards were honorable mentions, which were received in the following categories:
• Newspaper Design.
• Best Local Sports Coverage
• Best Editorial Page  
• Best Feature Photo (Dave Bell, for a picture of a bull rider at last summer’s county fair)
• Best Editorial (Dave Bell, for an editorial about former Gov. Rod Blagojevich)
