Sheriff Aaron Lay has decided that he will not seek a third term in office.
After having announced that he would seek re-election, Lay said on Tuesday morning that he was withdrawing from the race.
Lay, who was elected sheriff in 2006 and 2010, cited a “private sector opportunity” in deciding not to run for re-election in the 2014 election.
He has been with the sheriff’s department since 1990, when he was hired as a deputy by then-sheriff Dan Taylor.
“I wish the current candidates good luck, and will work whomever wins to ensure a smooth transition,” Lay said.
“And I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has supported me during my tenure as sheriff,” he said.
