ST. PETER – Taylor Well just keeps driving in runs for the Lady Vandals.
The Vandalia senior had four RBI on three hits on Monday, helping back a strong effort from senior pitcher Megan
Godoyo, who struck out nine in a 13-3 win at South Central, the team’s second straight after dropping the first four games of the season.
Well has recorded a hit in four of the six games this season, but she has 11 RBI on those eight hits. Her .444 average is second on the team to senior Kylie Sellers, who is batting .533 after a 1-for-3 effort on Monday.
Sellers scored three runs and stole three bases. She is 7-of-8 on steal attempts this season.
Vandalia (2-4) nearly batted around in the first inning, scoring three runs, but South Central (0-2) came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Godoyo settled in from there, as she allowed just one more run and scattered just four hits in the game.
Both teams scored a run in the third, and Vandalia added four in the fourth and five in the sixth to end the game early on the run rule, as the Lady Vandals did in their other win this season, a 14-4 victory against Lincolnwood a week earlier.
Sierra Gunnels, Jordan Schaal, Mia Campbell and Lauren Lotz each singled for the Lady Cougars, who have lost both of their games this season by the same score. Sophomore Abby King took the loss, striking out seven over the first five innings.
Vandalia travels to Teutopolis on Thursday, and opens the South Central Conference season on Friday at Carlinville. The Lady Vandals host a tournament on Saturday, and will welcome St. Elmo/Brownstown next Tuesday.
South Central opened its National Trail Conference schedule on Wednesday at St. Anthony, and continues with conference games at Neoga on Thursday, at Stew-Stras next Monday and against Altamont next Tuesday.
