The Lady Vandals played another tight South Central Conference game on Tuesday, but saw their lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh at Carlinville.

A single and an error followed by a two-run double allowed the Lady Cavaliers to earn a 5-4 win, dropping Vandalia to 1-2 in SCC games decided by one run.

Senior Megan Godoyo hit her third home run of the season and also tripled, and has six extra-base hits in the past seven games.

Senior Kylie Sellers and sophomore Karlie Bright singled and scored, and freshman Sarah Bigelow and junior Kelsey Swain also singled for the Lady Vandals (5-14, 1-3 SCC).

Vandalia took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on Godoyo’s triple and a sacrifice fly by senior Taylor Well, but Carlinville retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Godoyo’s two-run homer in the fifth gave Vandalia the lead, but five of the final seven batters would strike out.

The Lady Vandals had a pair of conference games canceled in the past week.

Last Friday’s game at Hillsboro and Monday’s matchup against Litchfield were both lost due to the weather.

No makeup dates have been announced.

Monday’s game was pushed back to a 6 p.m. start, but was eventually called off due to severe weather.

The season was scheduled to continue on Wednesday with a nonconference game at Pana, and a home conference game on Friday against Gillespie.

Next Tuesday, the Lady Vandals travel to Greenville for a nonconference matchup, and next Wednesday is a conference rain date.

VANDALIA – Freshman Sarah Bigelow continued the hot start to her career, and senior Megan Godoyo had another multi-hit game, but Vandalia wasn’t able to score in last Wednesday’s South Central Conference game, a 10-0 loss to Greenville.

Bigelow doubled for her first career extra-base hit, and Godoyo had a pair of singles in three trips to the plate for her fourth multi-hit game in the past five.

But Greenville limited Vandalia to just one other hit – a single by senior Brandy Protz – and scored in all but one inning to earn the win.

Bigelow is hitting .250, with three runs and two RBI in the four games since she cracked into the lineup on April 19.

Godoyo – whose .429 average leads the team – has hit safely in the past six games and 15 of the past 16 for the Lady Vandals (5-13, 1-2 SCC). On her current hitting streak, she is hitting .647, with nine runs and six RBI.

Vandalia twice got runners to second base, but never made a serious scoring threat in the game, as Whitney Gray tossed a complete game for Greenville, striking out five.

Gray also hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, and Jackie Hoffmeier collected five of Greenville’s 12 hits off of Godoyo (4-12), who allowed six earned runs and struck out eight in seven innings.
