VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals have opened the calendar year with three straight wins after beating county rival South Central, 72-11, on Monday.

Eleven Lady Vandals scored in the game against the inexperienced Lady Cougars, with senior Amber Bruno pacing the offense with 18 points.

Junior Megan Godoyo had 15, while junior Kaitlyn Kershaw had a season-high 10 and freshman Karlie Bright matched her career-high with seven for the Lady Vandals (8-11).

“I’ll take three wins any day,” said coach Michelle McNary. “We needed something to get us going and give us some confidence.”

Vandalia’s defense was on track against the Lady Cougars forcing 18 turnovers in the first quarter on the way to a 30-5 lead.

Bruno had a game-high five steals, and Vandalia had 25 as a team.

For South Central (0-17), senior Macie Cain had six points and five rebounds, and Taylor Keen made her first 3-pointer of the season.

The Lady Vandals will look to extend the winning streak on Thursday, when they host Pana at 6 p.m.

Pana defeated Vandalia, 52-34, earlier this season, but McNary believes that her team can do better the second time around.

“I don’t think they are that much better than us,” McNary said of the final margin. “Last time, we just gave up too many easy baskets, and they look to rebound misses, then get two passes and a layup.”

Vandalia won back-to-back games for the first time all season on Saturday, with a 66-54 win against Pinckneyville.

The game was tight through the first half, with the Lady Vandals (7-11) leading, 24-23, at the break, but a 23-point outburst in the third quarter, along with some stingy defense, gave Vandalia a seven-point edge going to the final period.

“It got us moving better and forced some turnovers when they made bad passes,” said coach Michelle McNary of the press defense.

Vandalia added an additional five points to the lead in the final eight minutes to capture the second win of 2013.

Senior Amber Bruno led in scoring with 27 points, and junior Megan Godoyo added 13. Both players had 10 rebounds.

Junior Morgan Cripe had a season-high 12 points, and freshman Karlie Bright had her career-best total, with seven points.

And though the 15 turnovers Vandalia committed are an issue, McNary said as long as the team is winning, she will tolerate some mistakes.

“If we can continue to play at that level and cause turnovers, I won’t like our turnovers, but I will live with them if we are winning games,” she said. “I’ll take anything to get us going right now.”
