Lady Vandals, alumni split doubleheader

VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals battled the alumni for the third time of the summer on Tuesday, and by splitting a doubleheader, each side now has a 3-3 record.

Megan Godoyo struck out 11 and the Lady Vandals scored in three different innings to take a 4-1 victory in the first game.

Kylie Sellers scored in both the first and third innings, while Brandy Protz also crossed the plate in the third and Gracie Morrison scored in the fourth.

For the alumni, Ashley Knebel walked to open the game and scored on a hit by Whitney Newsom, but Godoyo allowed just four base runners after that.

Facing mostly JV players in game two, the alumni scored early and often in a 19-4 victory.

Five runs scored in the top of the first, with Knebel, Newsom, Michelle McNary, Amber Connor and Ali Meyer crossing the plate.

Sellers scored in the bottom of the frame to get one of the runs back, but the alumni added three runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and eight in the sixth to take a commanding lead.

In total, Newsom and Connor scored three times, while Knebel, Jessie Pollard, McNary, Meyer, Michelle Otto and Shelby Cearlock scored twice. Jeni Boyd also scored once in the game.

Haley Cannon and Lindsay Dagen had singles to help the Lady Vandals scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with both scoring along with Madison Click on a big hit by Haley Bigelow.

The Lady Vandals return to action on Thursday, traveling to East Alton-Wood River for a 5 p.m. doubleheader before taking on the alumni for the final time next Tuesday in a doubleheader at 6 p.m.
