ALTAMONT – South Central’s volleyball team put a devastating loss behind and then made a frantic comeback to take third-place at Saturday’s Altamont Tournament.

After falling to Vandalia, 28-26, 19-25, 15-17, in the final game of pool play, the Lady Cougars had to deal with another South Central Conference team in Greenville.

After losing the first set, 20-25, South Central dominated in set two, winning, 25-13, and then came out on top in a back-and-forth third set, 17-15.

“I felt like we played a really good match with Vandalia, but then we had to wait awhile (as the main gym’s pool games finished), so I was worried about that,” said coach Mary Brimberry. “But I like playing Greenville, and I’m proud of the girls’ effort.”

Senior Kallie Garrett secured the win, scoring on back-to-back kills to end the match, the first coming by forcing Greenville’s player into a digging error and the second coming on a put-back after a block.

She led South Central with 11 kills in the match.

“She had a couple of mis-hits in the first set,” Brimberry said. “But she’s a leader for us, and (coming back strong) is what we expect her to do.”

In the third set, neither team had a lead of more than three, and the set was tied nine times, including at 15-15 when South Central broke Greenville’s match point by forcing a Lady Comet hitting error.

South Central held an early lead in the match, taking a 5-1 lead in the first set on four kills, but Greenville slowly erased its deficit until there was a tie at 6-6.

The set stayed close until Greenville broke away from a 16-16 tie and took a 20-16 lead, but the Lady Cougars rallied back to tie the set at 20-20. That would be all of their scoring, however, as Greenville secured the final five points.

After a 3-3 tie in the second set, South Central never trailed.

“They have a lot of fight in them, and there’s a lot of senior leadership out there,” Brimberry said. “Everyone wants to be a part of it, so they all try to do their part to help each other.”

In pool play, South Central defeated Lincolnwood, 25-19, 25-13, and Beecher City, 25-15, 25-23, before facing off with Vandalia.
