The Lady Cougars started slow, but eventually got rolling in a season-opening loss to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.
South Central fell begin 10-0 in the first quarter, but finished with a strong second half in falling, 39-26, to its National Trail Conference rival.
Freshman Alannah Sigrist paced the Lady Cougars (0-1, 0-1 NTC) with nine points in the loss, and senior Gwen Lewis and freshman Abby Hahn each scored four.
“We started out slow, getting down 10-0, but a lot of that was first-game jitters, I think,” said coach Gary Kapper. “We settled down, and then played well in spurts.”
The Hornets (1-0, 1-0 NTC) led 22-8 at halftime, but South Central outscored them by a point over the final two periods.
Kapper said there were chances to cut the deficit to less than 10 points, but his team wasn’t able to take advantage of the opportunities.
“We would get a turnover or rebound on the defensive end, but could not convert on the offensive end,” Kapper said. “We have to get more aggressive on the offensive end to create more chances to score.”
Freshman Sydney Wilkins added three points, while juniors Bailey Ritter and Jenna Rose, and sophomore Abby King added two.
Kirby Herrmann led all scorers with 10 points for CHBC.
In the JV game, South Central scored eight points in an overtime period to win, 29-23. Wilkins had nine points to lead all scorers.
South Central returns to action on Thursday, with a home game against North Clay at 6:15 p.m., and then will be in action at the NTC Tournament in Beecher City next week.
The first game is next Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Altamont.
