KC students tour state crime lab

Several Kaskaskia College Criminal Justice students had the opportunity to tour the Illinois State Police Metro-East Forensic Science Crime Lab in Belleville.

Students gathered in the educational classroom of this new building and two expert scientists from the area of fingerprints and firearms presented PowerPoint presentations. Topics included on-scene evidence collection and packaging, chain of evidence, photography and video evidence, documentation, and presenting in court.
Students learned of two professions existing in this specific field: evidence technicians/scientists (analyzing evidence); and crime scene investigations (sworn ISP troopers, crime scene evidence collection).
Educational requirements for the scientists include an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree in forensic science or one of the natural sciences. There are specialties within the science degree that are required for the fields.
Those on the tour included Shane Cain and Dylan Back of Patoka.
