KC hosting free family violence training

The Kaskaskia College Industrial and Continuing Education Department is partnering with the Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council from the Fourth Judicial Circuit for a free training for EMS personnel, first responders and home health care providers on Thursday, May 5, from 1-4 p.m. in the Life Long Learning Center on the Kaskaskia College main campus.
The training will provide a basic understanding of the dynamics of family violence; clues and evidence that might indicate that the person they are working with is a family violence victim or that it is happening in that particular household; and how EMS and home health personnel can best respond to and assist family violence victims.
This training is applicable for all professionals who respond to victims/clients in emergency cases, on-scene or in-home situations such as emergency medical technicians, first responders, certified nurse assistants, physical therapy assistants, nurses, home health care personnel and emergency room staff.
Trainers will be professionals in the fields of law enforcement, EMT, adult protective services, domestic violence advocate and sexual assault advocate.
Emergency medical personnel, first responders and home health care providers often see medical conditions caused by family violence.
In some cases, it may be obvious that a patient or their family is impacted by family violence, but often this fact might be hidden from the responder.
In 2014, the Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council was awarded a U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women grant to encourage arrest and enforcement of orders of protection (arrest grant). As part of this grant project, the Emergency Medical Services Promising Practices Toolkit has been developed to share information with emergency medical services personnel so that they can better respond to family violence victims.
This project is part of a continuous effort to educate and enhance services provided by community partners and to provide training that will improve practices and support efforts to increase victim and community safety.
Interested individuals may call the Kaskaskia College Industrial and Continuing Education Program at 545-3255 or Brenda Benton at 533-1530 to register.
