KC bands will present first concert of season

The Kaskaskia College Music Department will present its first concert of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday with the fall instrumental concert. The concert will feature the Kaskaskia College Concert and Jazz Bands under the direction of Professor Cliff Jourdan.
Concert band highlights include "The Processional Wedding March” by John Philip Sousa, and “Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’ Finale Excerpts” by Antonin Dvorak.
In addition, the concert band will perform “FUSION” by Brian Balmages: a piece that draws from various types of pop music and dance forms set within a contemporary framework. The ensemble will also perform a medley of traditional songs from the American West titled “Saddle Up!”  Excerpts include “Red River Valley," “The Yellow Rose of Texas," “Whoopee Ti-Yi-Yo” and “Cotton-Eyed Joe."
Special guest conductor Dr. Dee Boswell will lead the band in “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa. Boswell won the honor of conducting the Kaskaskia College Concert band during the April 2012 Rotary/Friends of the Fine Arts Auction.
Jazz band highlights include “Safety Net Blues” by Dave Barduhn, a big band version of Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From The Apple," “Phat and Sassy” by Paul Lohorn, an alto saxophone feature titled “Samantha” by Sammy Nestico, “La Quema del Diablo” (The Burning of the Devil) by Victor Lopez, and a Buddy Rich arrangement of “Basically Blues."
The concert is free and open to the public. A reception for performers and patrons will follow the concert.
