Jobs are always welcome here

-A A +A
By Dave Bell

The announcement this week that a Denny’s restaurant will be coming to the Fast Stop Travel Center at Vandalia’s western I-70 intersection is the kind of good news that we need to hear. And we’d like to hear it more often.
The news ended a four-year search by South Central FS general manager Byron Sikma to find a suitable restaurant to fill that facility. As noted in a story on page 5A of today’s paper, he was committed to landing a well-known national brand restaurant.
What he got was the best of both worlds – a strong national brand restaurant and a local man, Dave Behrends, as the franchisee. That combination bodes well for the stability of the new business.
Aside from adding to the restaurant options available here, the opening of the 24-hour Denny’s will produce an additional 50 jobs. We welcome those jobs, as Fayette County continues to wrestle with a high unemployment rate.
Also on this week’s business page is a story about the opening of a small mechanic shop, Quality Diesel Service, here in Vandalia. Though that business only employs two people to start with, it still represents a positive message about the business climate here. Big or small, we welcome new business ventures. And we wish them well.
In a time when many big corporations are moving their operations to what may appear to be greener pastures, we recognize the value of small businesses, run by local people with ties to the area. Certainly, we need both big and small, but those with local connections are here for the long haul.
Vandalia has a lot to offer to employers of all types and sizes. We all must be boosters of our community and loyal patrons of our hometown businesses. With our support, Vandalia can continue to grow.\
