DECATUR - Battling excessive heat and the top seed, the Lady Vandals still came out on top.
After falling to Warrensburg-Latham in the first game of the double-elimination tournament in a Decatur league for high schools on Saturday in 100-degree heat, the Lady Vandals stormed back in an offensive show the second game to win the league championship, 15-13.
Minus its top four pitchers for various reasons, Vandalia turned to Amber Bruno and Shelby Foster to pitch in the two games, and while they both struggled with control, the Lady Vandals offense provided enough support to overcome 18 walks in game two.
Three stories from Saturday's games will appear in the July 28 edition of The Leader-Union, and a photo gallery from Saturday will be posted on Thursday at www.leaderunion.com.
The softball team concludes its summer schedule with a game against the alumni on Monday and a contest with Greenville on Tuesday. Both games are at home and start at 6 p.m.
