CHARLESTON – Two small-school athletes from the area last Thursday participated in the state track preliminaries.

Patoka freshman Taylor Isaak took fifth in her heat of the 300-meter hurdles in her first state appearance, and St. Elmo junior Molly Hill came a couple of feet from throwing the discus 100 feet in her third state appearance.

Isaak found herself racing against some of the best 300-meter hurdlers in the state, with three of the top-five finishers in heat two, and her time of 48.95 seconds was the 17th best in the state.

The slowest finals qualifer finished in 46.48 seconds, and Isaak was the fourth-fastest freshman at state.

For Hill, it was a disappointing afternoon for last year’s seventh-place finisher.

The first of her three preliminary throws left her hand at a bad angle and went just 66 feet, 11 inches.

Hill’s second throw was her best, a toss of 98 feet, 4 inches, and her final throw went 94 feet, 3 inches.
